Tympanostomy tube
A tympanostomy tube is a small, tube-shaped device inserted into the eardrum to help drain fluid and equalize pressure in the middle ear. It’s commonly used for children with recurrent ear infections or persistent fluid buildup that affects hearing or causes discomfort. The procedure involves creating a tiny hole in the eardrum and placing the tube, which stays in place temporarily or sometimes longer, allowing air to enter and fluids to exit. This improves ear function, reduces infection risk, and helps restore normal hearing. The tubes generally fall out on their own as the eardrum heals.
