Trophic Diatom Index
The Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) is a scientific tool used to assess the water quality of lakes and rivers based on the types of diatoms (a group of microscopic algae) present. Different diatom species thrive under specific nutrient conditions; some indicate nutrient-rich (eutrophic) waters, while others suggest clearer, less nutrient-laden (oligotrophic) conditions. By analyzing the diatom community, the TDI provides an overall score that reflects the nutrient level and ecological health of the water. This helps environmental managers monitor water quality, identify pollution issues, and guide conservation efforts.
