tripartite system

The Tripartite System refers to the educational structure established in England after World War II, which divided secondary education into three types of schools: grammar schools, secondary modern schools, and technical schools. Students were sorted based on their performance in an examination called the 11-plus. Grammar schools offered academic education, secondary modern schools provided practical skills, and technical schools focused on vocational training. This system aimed to create opportunities based on ability but faced criticism for reinforcing social inequalities and limiting choices for many students. The system was gradually phased out in favor of comprehensive schools.
