TREM2 (Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2)

TREM2 (Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2) is a protein found on certain immune cells in the brain, called microglia. These cells help protect and maintain the brain by clearing away waste, damaged cells, and harmful substances. TREM2 helps regulate microglia’s activity, enabling them to respond properly to brain injuries or illnesses. Mutations in the TREM2 gene are linked to increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, because they can impair these microglia’s ability to perform their protective functions effectively.
