Treaty of Plombières
The Treaty of Plombières, signed in 1858 between France and the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont), was an agreement to form an alliance against Austria, which controlled part of Italy. France promised to support Sardinia’s efforts to unify Italy, and in return, Sardinia agreed to help France in future conflicts. The treaty laid the groundwork for Italy’s unification, with France providing military assistance against Austria, ultimately leading to the Second Italian War of Independence. This alliance was a strategic move to reshape European borders and reduce Austrian influence in Italy.
