Treaty of Meerssen
The Treaty of Meerssen, signed in 870, was an agreement between the Frankish kingdoms of West Francia and East Francia, which were part of the Carolingian Empire. It aimed to resolve territorial disputes following the death of Emperor Louis the Pious. The treaty divided regions such as Lotharingia, giving West Francia control of the western part, while East Francia gained the eastern part. This division reflected the growing fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire and laid the groundwork for future territorial boundaries in medieval Europe. The treaty was significant in shaping the political landscape of the region during that era.
