Treaties of Bassein

The Treaty of Bassein, signed in 1802, was an agreement between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire. It allowed the British to gain control over the Maratha ruler's army and finances. Essentially, the Maratha ruler accepted British influence in his governance in exchange for protection and support. This treaty marked a significant step in British expansion in India, leading to the eventual dominance over the Maratha territories and increased British control across the Indian subcontinent.
