Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat enlarged prostate caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A surgeon inserts a specialized instrument called a resectoscope through the urethra to remove excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow. This procedure is typically performed under anesthesia and aims to relieve urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, or frequent urination. TURP usually results in improved bladder function, with many patients experiencing significant symptom relief and a quicker recovery compared to open surgery.
