Transkei
Transkei was a region in South Africa that was designated as a semi-autonomous homeland for Xhosa-speaking Black South Africans during apartheid, from 1976 to 1994. Created by the government to segregate and control Black populations, it was officially recognized as an independent state in 1976 but had limited international recognition. In 1994, with South Africa's transition to democracy, Transkei was reincorporated into the new South African state. Today, the area is part of the Eastern Cape Province, and the legacy of Transkei highlights the apartheid-era policies of racial separation and self-governance.
