Trachoma

Trachoma is an infectious eye disease caused by the bacteria *Chlamydia trachomatis*. It primarily affects communities with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Repeated infections lead to inflammation, thickening of the inner eyelids, and scarring. Over time, this scarring causes the eyelashes to turn inward, rubbing against the eye, which can damage the cornea and lead to blindness if untreated. Trachoma spreads through contact with eye or nose secretions, often via hands, clothing, or flies. Prevention includes improved hygiene, sanitation, and antibiotic treatment, with surgery for advanced cases to prevent vision loss.
