Trịnh Lords
The Trịnh Lords were powerful military leaders in northern Vietnam from the early 16th to the late 18th century. They effectively ruled the region and held real governmental authority, while the Nguyễn Lords controlled the south. Although the Nguyễn claimed to be the rulers of Vietnam, the Trịnh Lords often exercised independent power, managing military, political, and economic affairs in the north. Their rule was characterized by constant rivalry with the Nguyễn, leading to periods of conflict and division within the country. Despite their authority, they recognized the monarchy as a symbolic figurehead, ultimately shaping Vietnam’s political landscape during that era.
