Tongan history
Tonga, an island nation in the South Pacific, boasts a rich history dating back over 3,000 years with Polynesian settlement. It was united under the powerful chief, Tuʻi Tonga, around the 10th century. The islands became a center for trade and cultural exchange. In the 19th century, Christianity was introduced, leading to significant social changes. Tonga became a constitutional monarchy in 1875, maintaining its sovereignty while interacting with Western powers. Today, it is known for its unique culture, language, and traditional practices, and is often referred to as the "Friendly Islands" due to its welcoming nature.
