Thrombomodulin
Thrombomodulin is a protein found on the surface of cells lining blood vessels. It plays a vital role in controlling blood clotting by binding to an enzyme called thrombin. When attached, thrombomodulin changes thrombin’s function from promoting clot formation to activating a different protein, which helps dissolve clots and prevent excessive clotting. This process ensures blood remains fluid while still being able to form clots when necessary, helping protect against excessive bleeding or clot-related conditions like strokes and heart attacks.
