Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Thrombocytopenic purpura is a condition characterized by a low number of platelets, which are cells in the blood that help with clotting. This can lead to easy bruising, bleeding gums, or small red or purple spots on the skin known as petechiae. There are two main types: idiopathic (or immune) thrombocytopenic purpura, where the body mistakenly destroys its platelets, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, which is more severe and involves blood clots forming in small vessels. Treatment varies and may include medications, blood transfusions, or other therapies to raise platelet levels and prevent bleeding complications.
