Three Sisters (method)

The Three Sisters method is a sustainable farming technique where three crops—corn, beans, and squash—are grown together. Corn provides a tall structure for beans to climb, beans fix nitrogen in the soil to nourish all plants, and squash spreads along the ground, shading the soil to retain moisture and prevent weeds. This symbiotic arrangement enhances productivity and health of the plants, while reducing the need for external inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. Originating from Native American agriculture, it's a natural, efficient way to cultivate multiple crops simultaneously, promoting biodiversity and resource conservation.
