Theophanes the Confessor

Theophanes the Confessor was a Byzantine monk and chronicler who lived in the 8th and 9th centuries. He is best known for his historical work, the "Chronographia," which provides a detailed account of Byzantine history from the creation of the world to his own time. His writings combine history, religious reflection, and political commentary, offering insights into the culture and events of the Byzantine Empire. Theophanes is also recognized for his strong defense of the Orthodox faith during the Iconoclastic Controversy, a period of conflict over the use of religious images in Christianity. He was canonized as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
