Theon of Alexandria was a prominent Greek mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher active in the late 4th and early 5th centuries CE. He is best known for editing and transmitting important astronomical texts, including the Almagest by Claudius Ptolemy. Theon contributed to the development of mathematical astronomy, providing commentaries and supporting scientific study in Alexandria. He is also recognized as the father of Hypatia, a renowned female philosopher and mathematician. His work helped preserve and advance classical Greek scientific knowledge during a period of cultural transition in the Greco-R Roman world.
