The Young Pretender (Charles Edward Stuart)

The Young Pretender, Charles Edward Stuart, was a Scottish prince born in 1720, who aimed to reclaim the British throne for his family, the Stuarts. He led the Jacobite uprising of 1745-1746, rallying supporters to overthrow the ruling Hanoverian government. Despite initial successes, his campaign ultimately failed at the Battle of Culloden. Charles became a romanticized figure representing Scottish resistance and royalist hopes, but he spent much of his life in exile, never achieving his goal of restoring the Stuart monarchy. His efforts significantly impacted British history and notions of Scottish identity.
