
The United States Exploring Expedition
The United States Exploring Expedition, also known as the Wilkes Expedition (1838–1842), was a major naval voyage sponsored by the U.S. government to explore and map uncharted parts of the Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, and surrounding regions. Led by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, the expedition collected valuable scientific, geographical, and botanical information, significantly expanding knowledge of these areas. It also helped establish American presence globally. The data and specimens gathered contributed to scientific institutions and industry, and the expedition marked an important milestone in U.S. exploration history.
