The Umbrella Movement
The Umbrella Movement was a pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong in 2014, demandingFair and open elections for the region’s leader. Protesters, mainly students and activists, occupied busy parts of the city, using umbrellas to shield themselves from pepper spray and to symbolize their resistance. They wanted the Chinese government to allow genuine leadership choices without interference. Though the movement didn’t immediately change election rules, it raised global awareness about Hong Kong’s political freedoms and sparked ongoing discussions about autonomy and democratic rights.
