The Treaty of Dover

The Treaty of Dover was a secret agreement signed in 1670 between England’s King Charles II and King Louis XIV of France. In this treaty, Charles promised to support France in its wars against the Dutch and, in return, Louis agreed to provide Charles with money and military aid. Additionally, Charles secretly agreed to convert to Catholicism, which was controversial because England was officially Protestant. The treaty aimed to strengthen England’s position in Europe but was kept secret, causing concern among other nations once it was revealed.
