The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change

The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change describes how people change habits through different stages: they start unaware or unmotivated (precontemplation), become aware and consider change (contemplation), plan and prepare (preparation), take action to change (action), and eventually maintain the new behavior (maintenance). Sometimes, people relapse and go back to earlier stages. Recognizing these stages helps tailor support and strategies to effectively guide individuals toward lasting change. This model applies to many behaviors, such as quitting smoking, exercising more, or adopting healthier eating habits.
