The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was a conflict between the Republican government, which included leftist groups, and Nationalists led by General Francisco Franco. The war erupted after a military coup against the democratically elected government. It involved significant foreign intervention, with the Soviet Union supporting the Republicans and Nazi Germany aiding the Nationalists. The war resulted in immense suffering, widespread destruction, and resulted in Franco's dictatorship, which lasted until his death in 1975. The conflict highlighted ideological battles between fascism, communism, and democracy, influencing global politics in the years leading up to World War II.
