The Performance Appraisal Paradox

The Performance Appraisal Paradox refers to the situation where performance reviews, meant to improve employee productivity, often have limited effectiveness or can even harm morale. While appraisals aim to provide feedback and motivate staff, they sometimes create stress, bias, or favoritism, leading employees to focus on appearances rather than actual improvement. Ironically, the very process designed to enhance performance can diminish genuine motivation or trust, making it a paradox: the tool intended for growth may inadvertently undermine it.
