The MTL model of memory

The Multi-Store Model (MTL) of memory suggests that our memory consists of three separate stores: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory briefly holds information from our senses; if we pay attention, it moves to short-term memory, which temporarily holds information we’re conscious of working with. With rehearsal or meaningful connections, this information can transfer to long-term memory, where it is stored more permanently. This model explains how we process, retain, and retrieve different types of information based on these stages.
