the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS)

The Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was an influential political movement in Algeria formed in the late 1980s, advocating for Islamic principles within government. It gained significant popular support by promoting Islamic laws and societal values. In 1991, FIS won parliamentary elections, but the military intervened and canceled the elections in 1992, fearing the rise of an Islamist government. This led to a violent civil conflict between government forces and Islamist groups, including FIS members. The FIS was eventually banned, but its ideas and members played a key role in Algeria’s political unrest during the 1990s.
