the Ionian Revolt
The Ionian Revolt (499–493 BCE) was an uprising by the Greek city-states in Ionia (modern-day Turkey) against Persian rule. The Persians had taken control of the region, and the Ionians sought independence and to restore their traditional freedoms. Encouraged by grievances over taxes and autonomy, they rebelled, supported by other Greek city-states like Athens and Eretria. The revolt involved battles and sieges but was eventually suppressed by Persia. It marked the beginning of the Greek-Persian Wars, highlighting tensions between Greek independence and Persian imperial ambitions.
