The Green Book

"The Green Book," officially titled "The Negro Motorist Green Book," was a travel guide published annually from 1936 to 1966. It was created by Victor Hugo Green to help African American travelers navigate the United States during the era of racial segregation. The guide listed safe places to eat, stay, and refuel, highlighting establishments that welcomed Black patrons. It became an essential resource, offering both practical travel information and a sense of community. The Green Book helped many avoid discriminatory experiences while traveling and remains a historical symbol of the challenges faced by African Americans during that period.
