The Great War in Africa
The Great War in Africa (1914-1918), also known as the East African Campaign, was a significant theater of World War I. It involved battles between Allied forces, primarily British and their colonial troops, and the German East Africa forces led by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. The war unfolded across present-day Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and parts of Mozambique. It was marked by guerrilla tactics, challenging terrain, and harsh conditions. Despite limited resources, von Lettow-Vorbeck’s forces delayed their defeat until the war’s end, demonstrating the complexity of colonial military engagements and the impact of the global conflict on African territories.
