The First War of Indian Independence

The First War of Indian Independence, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or Sepoy Mutiny, was a major uprising against British colonial rule. Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British army, upset by cultural insensitivity and policies, revolted in several regions. Their rebellion spread to civilians, challenging British authority. Although eventually suppressed, it marked a turning point, inspiring future efforts for independence. It reflected deep dissatisfaction with British policies and cultural disrespect, and is considered a significant rallying moment in India's struggle against colonial rule.
