the Elgin Marbles

The Elgin Marbles are a collection of classical Greek sculptures that were originally part of the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis in Athens. In the early 19th century, British diplomat Lord Elgin removed them and brought them to Britain. They are now housed in the British Museum. The marbles are celebrated for their exquisite artistry and historical significance, but their ownership is highly contested. Greece has long sought their return, arguing they are integral to its cultural heritage, while the British Museum maintains they were acquired legally and are better preserved in London.
