The Declaration of Independence (Haiti)

The Declaration of Independence of Haiti, signed in 1804, was a formal statement declaring Haiti's freedom from French colonial rule. It marked the end of slavery and colonial control, asserting the right of formerly enslaved Africans and their descendants to govern themselves. Written largely by leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines, it emphasized liberty, equality, and justice, inspired by Enlightenment ideals and revolutionary principles. This act made Haiti the first post-colonial independent nation led by former slaves, transforming it into the first black republic and inspiring other independence movements worldwide.
