The Confessing Church

The Confessing Church was a movement within German Protestant churches during Nazi rule that opposed the regime’s interference and ideological manipulation of church affairs. It aimed to preserve Christian doctrines and moral integrity against state control, especially rejecting the Nazi’s attempt to align church teachings with Nazi ideology. Leaders like Dietrich Bonhoeffer promoted theological independence and resistance. While not all members openly opposed Nazis, the Confessing Church symbolized a collective stand for religious integrity and moral resistance amid widespread opposition to oppressive policies.
