The Chicago Boys

The Chicago Boys were a group of Chilean economists trained at the University of Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s, known for advocating free-market reforms. They played a significant role in shaping Chile's economic policies during and after the military coup led by Augusto Pinochet in 1973. Favoring deregulation, privatization, and austerity, their policies aimed to reduce government intervention in the economy. While these reforms led to economic growth, they also resulted in social inequalities and unrest, making their legacy controversial in both Chile and beyond.
