The British East India Company

The British East India Company was a trading corporation established in 1600 to conduct commerce in the East Indies, primarily in India. Initially focused on trade in spices and silk, it gradually expanded its influence, gaining political power and territory through military force and treaties. By the 19th century, it effectively governed large parts of India. Its actions contributed to significant economic and social changes but also led to exploitation and unrest. The Company's rule ended in 1858 after the Indian Rebellion, leading to direct British control of India under the British Crown.
