The Battle of Sedgemoor

The Battle of Sedgemoor, fought on July 6, 1685, was the final major battlefield of the Monmouth Rebellion in England. It pitted government forces against rebels led by James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, who challenged King James II's rule. The rebels aimed to overthrow the king, but government troops, aided by local militia and some mercenaries, decisively defeated them. The battle resulted in many deaths and marked the end of significant organized resistance to James II's reign. It is also notable for the subsequent brutal repression of rebels, including the bloody Bloody Assizes, which punished those involved in the uprising.
