James Scott, known as the Duke of Monmouth, was an English nobleman and military leader in the 17th century, born in 1649. He was an illegitimate son of King Charles II and sought legitimacy through rebellion against King James II. In 1685, he led an unsuccessful uprising known as the Monmouth Rebellion to claim the throne. After his defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor, he was captured, tried, and executed. Monmouth is remembered for his role in the struggle for power during a turbulent period in British history, highlighting the complexities of monarchy, legitimacy, and rebellion.
