The Battle of Algiers
The Battle of Algiers (1956-1957) was a conflict during Algeria’s struggle for independence from France. Algerian independence fighters, mostly from the National Liberation Front (FLN), used guerrilla tactics, including bombings and street insurgency, against French colonial forces. The French military responded with harsh counterinsurgency measures, including arrests, torture, and operations aimed at dismantling the FLN network. The battle highlighted the brutal nature of colonial conflict and raised questions about tactics and morality. It ultimately contributed to France’s decision to grant independence to Algeria in 1962.
