The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program launched by UNESCO and WHO to encourage hospitals to support breastfeeding. It sets standards for maternity care practices that promote and protect breastfeeding. Hospitals that achieve Baby-Friendly status meet ten key criteria, which include providing education on breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact after birth, and discouraging the use of formula unless medically necessary. The goal is to improve infant health outcomes by ensuring that mothers receive the information and support they need to successfully breastfeed, fostering a healthy start for babies and promoting wellness for families.
