The American Indian Movement
The American Indian Movement (AIM) is a grassroots organization founded in 1968 to advocate for the rights and sovereignty of Native American people in the United States. AIM emerged in response to systemic injustices, poverty, and discrimination faced by Indigenous communities. It focused on issues like land rights, treaty enforcement, and social justice. AIM gained national attention through protests and occupations, notably the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973. The movement aimed to raise awareness about Native issues and promote cultural identity, ultimately seeking to improve the living conditions and rights of Native Americans.
