The Aligarh Movement

The Aligarh Movement was an educational and social reform initiative in British India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, led by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Its goal was to promote modern education and progressive ideas among Muslims to strengthen their social, political, and economic status. The movement emphasized the importance of scientific knowledge, modern curricula, and coexistence with the changing Indian society under British rule. By establishing institutions like Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (later Aligarh Muslim University), it aimed to empower Muslims through education and foster a sense of identity aligned with contemporary developments.
