The 1745 uprising

The 1745 uprising, known as the Jacobite Rising, was a rebellion in Britain aimed at restoring James Francis Edward Stuart ("the Old Pretender") to the throne, challenging the ruling Hanoverian monarchy. Sparked by dissatisfaction with political and religious issues, it involved Scottish Highlanders and some English supporters. The Jacobites sought to reclaim the throne for the Catholic Stuart family, but their efforts ultimately failed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The uprising significantly impacted Scottish history, influencing culture, laws, and attitudes towards the monarchy, and marked a key moment in the ongoing conflict over succession and national identity.
