Than Shwe

Than Shwe is a retired Burmese military leader who served as the head of Myanmar’s government from 1992 to 2011. He rose through the military ranks to become the country’s senior general and was the de facto ruler, exercising significant control over political and military affairs. His leadership was marked by authoritarian rule, suppression of opposition, and a slow move toward limited reforms. Under his guidance, Myanmar faced international criticism for human rights abuses and lack of democratic progress. After stepping down as State Peace and Development Council Chairman, he remained an influential figure within the military establishment.
