tear production
Tear production occurs in glands located above the outer corners of the eyes, called lacrimal glands. These glands release tear fluid, which spreads across the surface of the eye when you blink, keeping it moist, clear, and free of debris. Tears serve to lubricate the eye, wash away irritants, and provide nutrients to the corneal cells. Excess tears drain through small ducts into the nose. Tear production is a continuous process, increasing when you're crying or exposed to irritants, helping maintain eye health and comfort.
