Takauji's betrayal
Takauji, originally loyal to the imperial court, betrayed Emperor Go-Daigo by turning against him in 1333. Disagreeing with Go-Daigo’s plans to restore imperial power, Takauji sided with rival samurai clans and established the Ashikaga shogunate, effectively usurping imperial authority. This shift led to the Kemmu Restoration's collapse, initiating the more centralized Muromachi period. His betrayal was driven by political ambition, personal power, and a desire to control Japan's military and government, significantly altering the country's political landscape.
