Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT)
The Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) was a research study that tested whether reducing high blood pressure to lower targets could improve health outcomes. Participants with hypertension and a higher risk of heart disease were divided into two groups: one aimed for a systolic blood pressure below 140 mm Hg, and the other aimed for below 120 mm Hg. The study found that targeting the lower blood pressure significantly reduced the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death from cardiovascular causes. These findings help inform guidelines for more aggressive blood pressure management in certain high-risk individuals.
