syndrome of ectopic ACTH secretion

Ectopic ACTH syndrome occurs when a non-pituitary tumor, often in the lungs or other organs, produces excess adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Normally, the pituitary gland releases ACTH to stimulate the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, a stress hormone. In this syndrome, the tumor's overproduction of ACTH leads to excessively high cortisol levels, causing symptoms like weight gain, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, and skin changes. This condition disrupts normal hormone regulation and requires treatment to control hormone levels and address the underlying tumor.
