Synaptic homeostasis is the brain’s way of maintaining balanced communication between neurons. During wakefulness, neurons strengthen their connections as learning occurs. To prevent excessive activity, sleep triggers processes that weaken some of these connections, ensuring the brain stays flexible and efficient. This balancing act helps preserve overall neural stability, supports learning and memory, and protects against overexcitement or fatigue. Essentially, synaptic homeostasis ensures our brain's signaling remains effective and adaptable, preventing either too little or too much neural activity.
