Symbolic Violence
Symbolic violence refers to the subtle ways power and inequality are maintained through cultural norms, language, and social practices. It often occurs when dominant groups impose their values or beliefs as natural or normal, making marginalized groups accept and internalize these ideas without question. This process shapes how people perceive themselves and others, reinforcing social hierarchies without obvious physical force or coercion. Essentially, symbolic violence is a form of social control that operates through ideas and perceptions, subtly influencing individuals’ self-understanding and societal roles.
