Suu Kyi's 2020 election

In 2020, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won Myanmar’s general election by a significant majority, reaffirming their popularity. However, the military claimed the election was fraudulent without credible evidence and launched a coup on February 1, 2021, detaining Suu Kyi and other leaders. The military justified their actions by alleging election irregularities, but these claims were widely disputed. The coup led to widespread protests and civil disobedience, plunging Myanmar into a period of instability and violence, and undermining its democratic process established after decades of military rule.
